Little Sprouts books are designed to follow Jungle School's Adventurous Literacy Curriculum which is based on The Science of Reading. Each reading level is limited to a specific word list which corresponds to children's progression through the curriculum.

Reading Level 01

It’s a hot day and Rat is feeling annoyed. He is so exhausted from the heat that he decides to take a nap. However, the naughty cat Max disturbs his rest. Rat tries fanning himself, but it doesn’t help. Eventually he goes for a swim. Now he is wet, but at least he is not hot.

Ben and the Net

Reading Level 01

Ben is practicing his football skills. He goes to the field with several balls and decides to do free kicks. He tries and tries, but he cannot make a goal. Ben is frustrated. He sits down in the goal feeling defeated. Max notices and lays down beside Ben. Max is so silly that Ben feels better.

Dot is full of really good, bad ideas. She is always making impulsive decisions and getting into silly situations. In this story, Dot and her friends go on an adventure. They play music with items that they find around them like a cup and a pot.

Bad Luck Map

Reading Level 01

Dot and Rat are two friends who have the idea to go digging in the garbage can. To their surprise, they find an old treasure map. Following the map, they dig a big hole where they think the treasure is. However, what they find isn’t treasure, but a dirty sock and a rusty old can. They decide that the map is bad luck and return it to the garbage can.

Sub in the Tub

Reading Level 01

Meg is taking a bubble bath. Wearing her pink shower cap, Meg gets clean. Suddenly she feels something under the water. It’s a toy submarine! Excited Meg plays with the submarine, bouncing it in and out of the water. But... oh no! She got soapy water all over the floor. Meg hops out of the bath and grabs the mop. She cleans up the mess she made. He Dad comes by to check on her and gives her a thumbs up for being a responsible girl.

Tim has to Pack

Reading Level 02

Tim is going on a trip. He will take a cruise. He has a postcard showing the big ship. To prepare for his trip, Tim goes to the shop to buy a few things. The store employee, slug, suggests that he buy a fishing net, a rubber duck, and some gum. Tim pays 6 dollars. Slug wishes him a safe trip and Tim goes home. It is later that he thought so he rushes to pack his bag. When he arrives at the dock he is shocked to see that the boat is not like what it showed in the picture.

The Ship

Reading Level 02

This is the sequel to Tim has to Pack. In this story, Tim is at sea on a small wooden boat. The waves are big and the cruise was a disater. The rubber duck falls into the sea, then when Tim uses the net to get it out he accidentally catches a big crab. Not long after he notices a hole in the boat and water is pouring in. Fortunately, Tim has bubble gum. He chews some and sticks it to the hole. By this time, Tim is feeling sick and wishing the cruise would end.  

Dot has a Wish

Reading Level 02

It is Dot’s birthday. She invites her friends Ben and Meg to celebrate with her. They bring a cake with purple frosting and rainbow sprinkles. As dot gets ready to blow out the candles, naught Max licks the cake, getting frosting all over his face. Dot cries. The cake is ruined. Ben cheers her up by giving her a big present. Got gives her a large, flat pesent. Max feels bad so he brings her a dead fish. Ben’s plan worked. The gifts helped Dot to forget all about the ruined cake and enjoy her birthday celebration.

Not a Pet Frog

Reading Level 02

Fred is a frog who lives outside in the forest. He enjoys catching bugs, playing in the mud, and taking naps. One day, he finds a big pile of bugs. When he tries to eat one, a box falls on top of him. It was a trap! Someone caught Fred and put him in a pet store. He is very unhappy and does not want to be a pet frog.

Dot's Pet Moth

Reading Level 02

Dot has a pet moth which she keeps in a jar. One day she forgot to close the lid. The moth escaped out the window. Dot was sad and asked Ben to help her find the moth. They walked up a grassy hill, but they did not find the moth. They found an old shed. The Moth was not inside. Finally, after looking and looking, the found the moth a on the stem of a flower. Dot wanted to catch it and put it back in the jar. But Ben encouraged her to let it stay in the wild. Dot said goodbye to her pet moth.

This is Patrick

Reading Level 03

This story introduces a new character, Patrick. Patrick is 5 years old and enjoys baking and swimming. Another thing Patrick likes is being pulled around in his red wagon. But on this day, Patrick is going hiking. He prepares a bag with his supplies and heads up the mountain on foot. However, he encounters a beehive. Patrick must be careful not to disturb it.

The Dome Home

Reading Level 03

Tim lives in an igloo in the Arctic. His home is made of ice, but it is warm inside from the fire. Tim is hungry so he goes to the frozen lake to fish. He catches a big fish and lays is beside him. Max, that naughty cat, sneaks up and steals the fish. He runs and dives into a crack in the ice where he eats the whole fish. Now he is too fat to get back out of the crack! Tim has a rope. He uses it to pull Max up. But Tim slips on the ice and they both fall. Eventually, Tim stands up and carries Max back to the warm dome where they have a view of aurora borealis.

That was Rude, Dot!

Reading Level 03

Ben is on stage ready to perform a song with his flute. All his friends are in the audience ready to watch him perform. But wait… the sound is not working. Someone notices that Dot turned off the speakers. Why would she do that? Dot was feeling left out. She wanted to perform with Ben, but she did not have a flute. Dot started to cry. Ben had an idea. He took the flower from his lapel and gave it to Dot. This made her smile. Dot found a microphone and she and Ben performed together for all their friends.

Dot & Meg go to Space

Reading Level 03

Dot and Meg are playing make-believe. They have built a spaceship and astronaut helmet from old cardboard boxes. They are pretending to go to outers-pace. They start imagining what it would be like in space. Would there be cake in space? Would there be rice? They realize that outer-space might be dangerous with all the meteors flying around. And besides that, they are worried about how they will get home from space. Eventually, they decide that they don’t want to go on an adventure to outer-space after all.

Reading Level 03

The friends are all lined up outside of Slug’s shop waiting for it to open. There is a big sale today. Meg finds a game she likes and gets in line at the register. Dot needs a bag of rice, which she struggles to drag to her place in line behind Meg. Rat, who loves getting things on sale, fills his trolley with so many things that it is overflowing. Rat does not notice that Meg and Dot are already in line. He pushes his way to the register and starts unloading his many items. Meg is frustrated.
Slug, the cashier, holds up a sign that says, “Get back in line!” Rat is embarrassed. He takes his trolley and goes to the back of the line, but not before sticking his tongue out at Slug. Eventually it is Rat’s turn to check out. Slug makes a joke to cheer Rat up. It works. Rat goes home happy with his trolley full of bags.
